Australia is a proud nation, boasting tough terrain that we delight in conquering. We’re surrounded by water, and it is part of our identity. Core to our DNA. To swim is to unlock the very best of Australian life.
Optus is pleased to announce a principal partnership with Swimming Australia, and together we are on a mission to drive a passion for swimming across the nation.
As the number one participation sport in the country across all ages, over three million Aussies regularly swim. It may surprise, then, to learn that a whopping twenty percent of Australian kids cannot swim. That’s a whole lot of kids missing out on the fun activities for which the country is famous.
Let’s dive back into the sport that is a part of us all.
How do we get more Aussies back in the water?
We believe that strong swimming skills are the cornerstone of Australian life. Between summers at the beach, cooling off in a backyard pool, and all the on-water activities we can indulge in, it is so important to learn how to swim.
Optus is committed to supporting swimming from the grassroots up. In conjunction with Swimming Australia, we have launched the Optus Junior Dolphins Program. We are heading into swimming schools with one big goal: to make swimming more fun. We want to keep kids swimming longer with maximum enjoyment. Aimed at kids aged five to eight, the program offers the chance for young people to realise their swimming dreams in a safe, encouraging environment.
We are also throwing support behind the Dolphins senior team – from the National Championships, through to the World Championships, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo and beyond.
We’ve got some work to do, but the road ahead is looking very positive for the sport.
What is coming up in the world of swimming?
The next big event is the National Championships, held in Brisbane on April 9-13.
This will be Optus’ first outing on the swimming scene, and we want to make a big splash – the National Championships are the qualifier for the global stage, the World Championships in Budapest this coming July.
If you want to support your swimming heroes, we’re giving away 1000 tickets via Optus Perks.
There will also be Optus Junior Dolphin swimming clinics between heats and finals, and Olympic superstar Ian Thorpe will be getting fans fired up on the Thursday night, as well as meeting with his many fans.
It’s time to get excited about swimming again.
